I’ve had a few people email me asking for freelance writing blog tips. Lots of freelancers want to know what they should blog about, how often they should blog, and other details. They’re specifically interested in blog tips for lead generation.
You’ve heard of lead magnets, right? They’re usually e-books, whitepapers, videos, webinars, or some other piece of in-depth content that you provide only to people who perform a specific action.
Want to build your email list? Create a lead magnet. People get your downloadable asset after providing their contact information.
But I don’t think that downloadable lead magnets are the only way to go. In fact, I think that freelance writer blogs can serve as lead magnets by themselves.
Here are a few blog tips for lead generation that can help you improve performance and attract more potential clients.
Blog Tips for Lead Generation 1: Own Your Niche
Lots of freelance writers think that they should blog about writing. That’s fine, but it’s not the only option.
I’ve worked with lots of freelance writers who blog about their niches. The blogs, therefore, become lead magnets as well as portfolios.
Let’s say that you specialize in writing about health and wellness. Why not use your blog to help people become healthier?
Prospective clients will immediately see that you know what you’re talking about. Even better, they’ll get an example of your writing style — not just for yourself, but for others.
Amy Rigby, also known as The Wherever Writer, blogs about travel. She offers her services as a freelance writer, but her blog focuses on her core market.
It’s a great way to maintain your passion for your niche while drawing organic traffic from the search engines and establishing your credibility for potential clients.
Blog Tips for Lead Generation 2: Provide Social Proof
Yes, it’s a buzz word, but it’s also important. Social proof sends signals to potential clients that they should consider your freelance writing services.
Testimonials are a great form of social proof, but I recommend taking it a step further. Interview your clients for your blog.
Ask them about their content marketing strategies, their goals, they triumphs, their experience working with you. Just make sure you focus on them more than your business so you don’t come across as overly self-promotional.
Interviews are great because they provide a fresh voice for your blog and create valuable content for readers. A prospective client wants to know what you can do for him or her. Show what you’ve done for others.
You can also turn interviews into great lead magnets. The social proof provides instant credibility, and a compelling CTA at the end can result in fresh leads.
Blog Tips for Lead Generation 3: Get In Front of Questions
Freelance writers get questions from prospects all the time. Clients want to know what you charge, how you approach a freelance writing assignment, what byline you request, if any, and more.
Use your blog to answer those questions. It’s called breaking down barriers. When you’re transparent about your policies and workflow, people instantly feel more comfortable asking for a quote.
This isn’t to say that you should reveal trade secrets or tell your life story. Just answer the pertinent questions clients might have before deciding whether or not to work with you.
Not only does this freelance writing blog strategy help generate leads, but it also disqualifies leads. Why would you want to waste time corresponding with someone who will never actually hire you?
Blog Tips for Lead Generation 4: Change Up Your Style
I’ve mentioned this before: Most freelance writers work as ghostwriters these days. They don’t get bylines.
Consequently, you have to demonstrate your ability to write in a wide range of styles, voices, and tones. If you can’t match your client’s existing content, your work will fall flat.
One of my best freelance writing blog tips is to write varied content. Publish a short, punchy post of 300 words. Follow it up with an in-depth, 3,000-word guide. Add a how-to, a listicle, an interview, and an image-driven post.
In other words, show off the breadth of your talent through diversity.
With that said, you don’t want to go all over the map. Make sure you keep some things consistent. For instance, you might always include the same CTA at the end of your posts. Or you might use similar phrasing or jargon to let readers know that it’s still you behind those posts.
Blog Tips for Lead Generation 5: Have Some Fun
We’re always so serious, aren’t we? But blogging and lead generation can be fun.
In fact, it should be. If you don’t have fun with blogging, why do you want to be a freelance writer?
Don’t be afraid to let your humorous side show through. Express your personality. Make yourself known.
I still struggle with this. My instincts tell me to keep things buttoned up, to avoid sharing too much about my personal life, to perfect every sentence grammatically.
Screw all that. You need professionalism, but you also need to have fun.
And believe it not, prospective clients will feel drawn to your personality. Hence, the blog-as-lead-magnet strategy.
I don’t think that lead magnets come in just one form. You can enhance your lead generation process in multiple ways — including through your blog.
You’re a freelance writer, right? A blog should be the perfect place to convince prospects to hire you.
Share your personality, interview customers, own your niche, answer potentially limiting questions, and change up your style a bit.
The leads will come.
